Thuli Mahlangu
My professional journey is layered. I have worked on hundreds of corporate, retail, hospitality and residential spaces locally and internationally; freelanced and inevitably became an entrepreneur. I currently run Zing Design; an architectural design company based in Johannesburg.
My experience has enabled me to traverse many architectural spaces, which allows my team and I to transform the interior DNA of not just the buildings; yet also the people’s view and outlook of life from the inside out.
I meet many influential individuals whom are my clients, associates and friends. I believe in treating others with respect and taking care of their projects as though they are my own. My team and I are like family, we share a common vision as well as share similar values, this alignment allows us to create and work as best as we can to deliver the best outcomes for our clients and community.
Being part of a women-led team has exposed so much about my industry and the challenges we face as women.
I have realised over the years that we all have our own version of what an achievement is, and whether we have attained it or not. As much as I live a life filled with achieving goals and deadlines, I personally do not think I have come close to any type of achievement. It’s always a work in progress, and something part of the process. I prefer for the work to speak for itself, even better, for others to share what they have achieved through us providing a job, or contract, or finished design in my company.
I have been featured in magazines, been part of interviews on television and radio, been a judge on a 13-episode reality home-make over show and also the design editor for an online magazine. I get commissioned by private clients and public figures for art and design.
Being a member of the IID has been beneficial for my business and I. Networking and interacting with other designers and industry leaders brings insights and inspiration to steer the design ship better for everyone in our country, continent and planet.
